How to Set Up The WordPress Pinging Service: WordPress Tip #3

4 Oct, 2007  |  Written by Fred  |  under WordPress Tps

Pat Doyle wrote a post today answering a reader question about how to set up WordPress to ping various blog directories. I thought that this would make a great how to article for my WordPress Tip series.

What is pinging?

Pinging allows you to tell blog directories that you have published a new article on your blog. WordPress is set up to automatically ping Pingomatic. However, you can add other blog directories so that they are automatically pinged every time you publish new content. I like to ping Technorati, but have added several other services. In fact, I just updated my list to include all of those recommended by Pat in you post.

How to Set Up the WordPress Pining Service:

1. Go to your WordPress Admin Panel.

WordPress Admin Panel

2. Go to the Options tab.

WordPress Options

3. Go to the Writing tab and scroll down to the Update Services area.

WordPress Pinging

4. Add the pinging services that you want to ping. I am pinging the following services. You can copy and paste this list into your pinging services list.

http://rpc.pingomatic.com/

http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping

http://pingoat.com/goat/RPC2/

http://pingqueue.com/rpc/

http://ping.feedburner.com

http://www.bloglines.com/ping

http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2

5. Hit the Update Options Button to make sure that you additions are saved.

Pinging multiple services is always a good idea.

Feedburner also offer a service called PingShot which will automatically ping a variety of services. It is available under the Publicize tab when you log into your Feedburner account. That is another option worth considering.

I prefer Wordpress not to ping any services at all, and let Feedburner do all the hard work, but what you have suggested will work equally well, especially for more specialized pinging services that Feedburner may not offer.

I’ve read reports that if you setup a long list of pinging services in Wordpress that it can slow postings down, although I’ve got no evidence to support that. I think a list of 10 or so like you suggest would work fine.

    Dean,

I have heard the same thing pinging services slowing down posts. I think that people should not include to many sites to ping.

Thanks for the advice about Feedburner’s pinging service. I am going to check it out right now.

In the past I have had a problem where one ping service, I forget which one, simply wasn’t responding and that locked up my Wordpress admin for quite a long time while it tried to ping it.
It was some time ago and may be sorted now but that Feedburner option seems interesting so I am going to give that whirl.

    Hi Fred,

I ping on some of my blogs and others I don’t. Still haven’t found a good reason for either. Great tutorial and I stumbled it too.

Hi, I am confused, there is no ‘Update Services area’ in my wordpress writing tab, and I use wp 2.1. Can you suggest whats wrong? Thanks

I’ve examined my WordPress blog (ChaosTheory theme) and I too cannot find the mentioned services area.

After checking the Help service on WP.org my conclusion is that WP 2.1 automatically pings ‘Pingomatic’ for every posting, and does not allow the option to amend pinging capabilities as this post suggests.

This is just my conclusion and I would welcome more experienced commentors providing a more informed answer.

    Cheers!
