Easiest Way to Upgrade to WordPress 2.3

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

With the release of WordPress 2.3 yesterday bloggers are stampeding to upgrade their blogs.  In fact, I upgraded Newest on the Net yesterday and boy was it easy.  What made it so easy?  The WordPress Automatic Update Plugin.  In 6 easy steps my WordPress blog was upgraded from WordPress 2.2.2 to 2.3.

Like any other plugin, you have to download, extract and upload the plugin to your server.  Once the plugin is activated, it walks you through a 6 step process.  The WordPress Automatic Update Plugin does the following:

  1. Backs up your current installation
  2. Downloads the latest version of WordPress
  3. Puts your site in maintenance mode
  4. De-activates your plugins
  5. Upgrades the WordPress files
  6. Re-activates your plugins

Once your plugins are reactivated, you are ready to blog on your new WordPress 2.3 blog.

I used this plugin on my own blog earlier today. It was a breeze to use but I lost the link to reactivate my plugins so I had to do that manually. I had a minor panic attack when I thought I had lost all my draft posts until I realised that I simply had to select the “draft” status from the post dropdown and then click the filter button! Phew :-)

I always skip step 4 and 6, so far never had any issues but guess that’s mainly since the plugins I use aren’t really sensitive to the upgrades :).

That sounds great but I fear there is more to it that that. Nearly 2 years down the line with WordPress have taught me to be very careful when it come to upgrading to a new version of WordPress and ?’d be very cautious about automating my upgrades …

That plugin does look useful for a lot of people. Looks like it has worked well for you.

I consider a new version of Wordpress an opportunity for me to backup my database and wordpress files. I can get lazy when it comes to backups so these upgrades spur me into action! I’ve always done my upgrades manually. I don’t think I could pluck up courage to go the automated route, but I guess if I’ve done all my backups first I could go for it :-)

    Dean,

One of the nice things about this plugin is that it does a backup first. You are in control of moving forward with each step of the process.

Now this seems like a real find!

I had enough trouble getting Wordpress installed on my hosting in the first place, and I have no idea how you would upgrade it manually?

So this sounds great I will definitely use it when I do my upgrade

    Thanks Fred
