What is RSS?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

If you are interested in blogging, Internet news, social media, and Internet marketing, please subscribe to my RSS feed. If you don’t know about RSS, here is an explaination.

What is RSS?

RSS is a signal that comes from a favorite blog or site, telling your computer that it has been updated with a new article or post. If you have an RSS reader (and they’re free and easy, and I recommend Google Reader), whenever a blog is updated, it shows up in your reader and you can catch up on the news. If there’s nothing new, it doesn’t show up and you don’t have to waste time surfing around.

Why should you use RSS?

By using RSS and an RSS reader, you can view new articles from your favorite blogs any time the authors publish a new post. You can view all of your favorite blogs by visiting just one website.

Why you should subscribe to Newest on the Net’s RSS feed?

By signing up for Newest on the Net’s RSS feed, you will never have to worry about missing any of my posts. Becoming a subscriber (remember it is free) you will get every article that I write delivered directly to you RSS reader.

I use Google Reader to read about 200 blogs. I can skim the titles of each blog article written by these 200 bloggers and read the articles that interest me the most. I can read through about 100 new blog articles in about 20 minutes.

Free, easy, permanent until you undo it and it’ll save you time.

Jango: Putting Social Into Internet Radio

Jango LogoToday I was fortunate to get invited into the Jango beta. I am really excited about Jango. My wife and I have been big fans of Pandora for about a year now. However, Pandora offers no social features. Pandora also does not do a great job of introducing you to new music. Having said that, Pandora is an awesome service. Will Jango meet my expectations?

Well, so far it is meeting my expectations. Like with Pandora, Jango allows you to create custom stations by typing in an artist. That station will play songs by that artist and by similar artists. This is a great way to listen to music. Sometimes my wife and I feel like listening to classical music and we type in Handel or Mozart. Sometimes we are in the mood for blues so we type in Nora Jones. Other times we feel like partying so we type in Jimmy Buffett.

Jango also has preset stations. This is a nice change from Pandora. You can find out about new pop music, rock, R&B, country, and electronica (I don’t even know what that is). Here is a picture of the home page.

Jango Home Page

Now for the social. Jango shows you what other people are listening to. Jango also helps you get in touch with people who enjoy similar types of music. Listening to music becomes participatory. You share your likes with others and help them to discover new music. In the process you learn about new music too. Pretty cool.

You should sign up for the beta. I got my invitation the same day that I applied.

If you get in, tell me if you like it.

Update: I just received 500 invites to give away for Jango. If you would like to try it out, sign up for Jango using this link.

Newsvine is Acquired by MSNBC.com

NewsvineMSNBC.com, the online arm of the cable news station MSNBC, has just acquired Newsvine. With this acquisition MSNBC is getting into the social news business. According to Newsvine’s blog, Newsvine will continue to operate independently of MSNBC.com. However, MSNBC.com and Newsvine are going to try to incorporate each other’s content where it makes sense. Newsvine has stated that the reason for the acquisition is,

Although going from zero to over a million users a month in less than two years is heartening, msnbc.com operates on another scale entirely. While Newsvine may be well known in early adopter circles, we want every college student, every farmer, every weekend journalist, and every household to have their own branch on the ‘Vine. In order to spread this idea further, we could have gone out and raised a lot of money, quadrupled our staff, and gone it alone, but when one of the finest news organizations in the world is headquartered right across Lake Washington, the potential of partnering with such a great team is dramatic.

This is a very interesting development. Mainstream media is starting to gobble up social media sites. While this is just one acquisition, I believe that we will see more mainstream (or old-stream) media sites move to more social distribution. However, it will be interesting whether Internet user will embrace these ventures.

Welcome to Newest on the Net!!

I would like to welcome you to Newest on the Net. I have created Newest on the Net to provide you with the latest trends occurring in our online world. This blog was born from my love of technology and my fascination with social networking, blogging, podcasting and all the other ways the Internet is allowing humans to communicate with one another.  When I was younger, I used to always think that my grandparents were so lucky to have experienced some of the greatest inventions, e.g. cars, airplanes, rockets and television. However, with the invention of the Internet I am no longer envious. The Internet is the greatest invention of all times.

Please subscribe to my blog and I promise to bring you the latest in blogging and social networking.
